This is one of the most common situations Indian students face, and it's completely okay to feel stuck. Your parents usually want security and respect for you. You want a life you enjoy. Those goals aren't actually opposites, and that's where the conversation can start. Before you talk, get clear yourself - What exactly do you want to do instead? "Not medicine" is hard for parents to accept. "Psychology, because..." is much easier. - Why does it fit you? Mention marks, things you've built, feedback from teachers, or an assessment result. - What does the path look like? Degree, entrance exam, cost, and what a first job looks like.

Follow-up: How do I actually start the conversation? Pick a calm time, not right after results or a fight. Then: 1. Acknowledge their reasons. "I know you want me to have a stable, respected career." 2. Share your plan, not just your feelings. Show the research. 3. Ask for a trial. For example, an internship, a short course, or one term to test your interest seriously. 4. Invite a third person they trust: a teacher, a counsellor, or a relative in the field. Avoid comparing with friends or saying "you never understand". That shuts the door.

Follow-up: What if they still say no? Then look for middle ground: - Can you keep both options open for a while (for example, taking the subjects needed for both)? - Is there a related career that satisfies their worry and your interest, like biomedical engineering, health data, or clinical psychology? - Can you agree on a decision date after you've both gathered more information? Most parents shift when they see you're serious and informed, even if it takes a few conversations.

Follow-up: I feel really stressed about all this. Is that normal? Yes. Career pressure is one of the biggest sources of stress for students. Talk to a friend, teacher or school counsellor.
