The written route is the same: you clear the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE), and IPS is one of the services allotted based on your rank and preferences. But there are a few IPS-specific points. Eligibility - Graduation in any subject; final-year students can apply. - Age 21 to 32 for general category, with relaxations for reserved categories (check the UPSC notification). - Physical standards for IPS: minimum height and chest measurements, and eyesight standards, which differ for men, women and some categories. These are listed in the UPSC CSE notification. Ranking matters IAS usually takes the top ranks, so you need a strong rank and to list IPS high in your preferences. Many candidates choose IPS first because they genuinely want policing. What IPS officers do - Lead police in districts as Superintendent of Police (SP). - Handle law and order, crime investigation, intelligence and security. - Serve in central organisations like CBI, IB, NIA, CRPF and BSF. Training: foundation course at LBSNAA, then police training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad. Preparation tips beyond UPSC basics - Build physical fitness early; training is demanding. - Develop leadership, decision-making under pressure and composure. These come up in the interview. - Read about internal security, policing reforms and the new criminal laws. Other routes into policing: state PSC exams (DSP posts), and CAPF Assistant Commandant (UPSC). Guidopia's Career DNA shows your fit for civil services and leadership roles.
