AI is a great field to aim for, but the degree name matters less than the foundations under it. B.Tech AI/ML vs B.Tech CSE - CSE gives broader computer-science fundamentals: algorithms, operating systems, networks, databases. You can take AI electives later. - AI & ML / AI & DS branches add more maths, statistics and ML courses earlier. - At a good college, either works. If unsure, CSE keeps more doors open. Avoid choosing a weak college only because it has "AI" in the branch name. Other routes - B.Sc Maths/Statistics/CS, then a master's in AI or data science. - IIT Madras BS in Data Science alongside another degree. - ISI and CMI for students very strong in maths. The foundations that make AI engineers 1. Maths: linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics. 2. Programming: Python first, plus data structures and algorithms. 3. Machine learning: classic ML, then deep learning (PyTorch). 4. Building: deploy small projects, like a chatbot over your notes, an image classifier, or a recommendation system. Explain what you measured. Kinds of AI roles - ML engineer (builds and deploys models). - AI/LLM application engineer (builds products using existing models). - Research scientist (usually needs a master's or PhD). - Data scientist and MLOps engineer. Start in school: learn Python, do maths properly, and try beginner courses like Google's or NPTEL's free ML courses.
