UX (user experience) design is about making apps, websites and products easy and pleasant to use. UX designers research users, map their journeys, sketch wireframes, build prototypes and test them. UI design focuses on the visual layer: layouts, colour, type. Do you need a design degree? Not strictly, but it helps. Routes after 12th: - B.Des in interaction/communication design through UCEED (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIITDM Jabalpur and others use it), NID DAT, or private design school exams. - Psychology, HCI-related or CS degrees, then a UX specialisation. Psychology is a surprisingly good base because UX is about understanding people. - Any degree plus a strong portfolio and certification can get you into junior roles, though the market for juniors is competitive. Skills that matter - User research: interviews, surveys, usability tests. - Information architecture and user flows. - Wireframing and prototyping in Figma. - Visual design basics: grids, typography, accessibility. - Writing clearly and presenting your reasoning. Portfolio is everything. Show 3 to 4 case studies: the problem, who you talked to, what you tried, what failed, and what you changed. Redesigning a real Indian app or a local service with genuine user interviews is a great start. Related careers: UX researcher, product designer, UX writer, service designer. For pay, check current ranges on LinkedIn or AmbitionBox for "UX designer" in your city. Experience and portfolio quality move salary much more than the degree name. Curious whether UX fits you?
