Flying is a dream career for many, and it's achievable, but it's expensive and needs careful planning. Eligibility (DGCA rules, check the latest) - Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics. If you didn't take them, you can clear them through NIOS. - Minimum age 17 to start training (18 to get the licence). - Class 2 medical, then Class 1 medical from a DGCA-approved examiner. Do the medical first, before paying any fees. The path to a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) 1. Join a DGCA-approved flying training organisation (FTO) in India or abroad. 2. Clear DGCA ground exams: air navigation, meteorology, regulations, technical subjects, plus the radio telephony licence. 3. Complete around 200 hours of flying. 4. Get your CPL, then a type rating on a specific aircraft (like A320 or B737), often the costliest part, before an airline hires you. Cost: total costs including type rating are often quoted in the range of several tens of lakhs to around a crore, depending on the school, country and type rating. Get written, all-inclusive quotes and check the FTO's track record. Cheaper or sponsored routes - Airline cadet programmes: some airlines run cadet pilot programmes with partner schools and conditional job offers. Read the terms and bonds carefully. - Indian Air Force via NDA or AFCAT: you train for free and serve as a military pilot. - IGRUA (government-run academy) has a selection test. Reality check: hiring can be cyclical. Have a fallback degree, and avoid huge loans without a plan. Guidopia's Career DNA shows your fit for Pilot, including spatial reasoning and stress handling.
