An MBA can transform a career, but its value depends heavily on the college and on when you do it. Main entrance exams - CAT: for IIMs and many top B-schools (conducted by IIMs on rotation). - XAT (XLRI and others), GMAT (international and some Indian schools), SNAP, NMAT, CMAT. When is an MBA worth it? - From a top B-school (IIMs, ISB, XLRI, FMS, SPJIMR, JBIMS, MDI and others) where placements are strong and verifiable. - When you have a clear goal: consulting, product management, finance, marketing leadership. - When it helps you switch fields, like engineering to finance. When it may not be worth it - From a low-ranked college with expensive fees and weak, unverified placements. - If you're doing it only because you don't know what else to do. Fresher or work experience first? - Many top schools take freshers, and CAT doesn't require experience. - But 2–3 years of work often gives you better interviews, better class discussions, and clearer goals. Some programmes (like ISB's) expect work experience. - If you crack a top B-school as a fresher, it can still be a great move. Check before joining - Official placement reports (many schools publish audited reports). - Median salary, not just the highest package. - Total cost including hostel, and loan options.
